Boston MA: Laser skin resurfacing is the correction of various skin imperfections using a laser. It’s used to get rid of acne, scars, wrinkles, age spots, and more. Anyone who wants the results to last longer than a few weeks should follow these steps to prepare for laser skin resurfacing.
Refrain from applying any facial creams and body lotions on your skin. The skin must be thoroughly clean and dry for you to get the best results from the procedure. It’s more difficult to treat skin that has been slathered with layers of chemical-filled gels, creams, or moisturizers.
The doctor will ask you a series of questions to see if you’re qualified for laser skin resurfacing. People who take certain acne medication or are pregnant and breastfeeding are a few people who are disqualified from the procedure. Be honest when the doctor asks questions about your preexisting conditions, current use of medications, past procedures, etc.
Make sure that your skin is thoroughly clean and dry. The doctor will perform a physical examination of the skin. This is necessary to ensure that it’s in good condition and prepped for laser treatment.
Shortly before the procedure, stop taking certain medications that could interfere with your treatment. These include all skin medications, including those that cause photosensitivity or interfere with wound healing.
Take a day or longer off of work. The procedure takes an average of 30 minutes to two hours to complete. Some people can undergo the entire procedure during a two-hour lunch period, but this is not recommended. If you’ll be sedated during the treatment, you’ll need time to rest afterward.
Redness, swelling, and infections in the skin are common side effects. There are the additional risks of scarring and pigmentation as well. Know all of the risks that you could face, especially if you have a preexisting medical condition. There are also risks of sedation, such as nausea and vomiting.
After getting treated, stay out of the sun for several weeks as the skin heals. New skin cell regeneration will be complete after a month, so wait that long until you step back into the sun,
Stop smoking shortly before the procedure for at least two or more weeks. This step will increase your body’s chances of healing.
